The built environment and COVID-19

The world’s most valuable sector is responding to the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic with creativity, innovation and leadership. To help you navigate this fast-changing world, ING produced ten intelligence briefings tracking these innovations and identifying emerging trends.

ING’s bulletin series provide analysis on ten key trends likely to impact on the future of the built environment.

At the beginning of the year, our sector looked very different: record UK employment, the highest volume of new starts in London and the hope of a post-Brexit bounce.

It is a reminder of how fragile and uncertain the world can be. Since sharing our first bulletin a few days after lockdown, ING has completed a phased return to work so we can be fully immersed in the product we are supporting – the city around us.

From here we are better able to assess how the built environment will change how we use buildings, infrastructure, and spaces.

Over 20 weeks we have broadly analysed the pandemic’s impact on the built environment, exploring culture, creativity, collaboration, networking, content, inequality, climate and technology, and provided analysis on what narratives may be required to ensure the world’s most valuable sector retains its significance.

But what comes next? Will the crisis really change the buildings and places we work to create? Or will the new normal soon start to look very much like the old normal?

To tackle the themes that emerged from our bulletin and look to the future we hosted a virtual debate with an expert group of panellists from across the built environment.

Here you can watch the debate in full (below) and download all ten copies of our bulletins to read.
