The London Barking of Barking and Dagenham is investing in a number of public realm works in the borough in order improve the environment for local residents and to attract new business and investment. ING is working with the local authority to promote ‘Paint the Town’, a project which has seen a group of young artists work with shopkeepers and local businesses to help decorate and renovate 27 shop fronts in the town centre. The project is designed to create a more welcoming street scape and to discourage anti-social behaviour. It has gathered interest and support from local shopkeepers and further premises are due to be given a makeover as part of the programme. The artists also worked with students from Barking and Dagenham College on a number of workshops to give them an insight into how public art is commissioned and delivered. Funding for the project was provided by the Mayor’s Outer London Fund.
